John Ive: A better iPhone battery would make it too heavy

Nowadays one of the biggest issues regarding mobile devices is the battery packed inside. Despite their short lives being a major drawback, Apple doesn’t share the same concern.
Well, John Ive doesn’t anyway. The Apple design boss sided said in an interview with the Financial Times that packing a better battery would make the handset heavier and less ‘compelling.’
Favouring style over substance, the report claims Ive said that “it’s because it’s so light and thin that we use it so much and therefore deplete the battery.”
While the iPhone 6 battery lasts around a day, at least now there’s the iPhone 6 Plus for those looking for a significantly beefier battery.
Most people that go for the iPhone admittedly prioritise the design amongst all else, so Ive has a point. However he could have avoided headlines by stressing that increased battery life was something Apple is working on – just a thought.
In the same interview, Ive also spoke about the upcoming Apple Watch – which gets unveiled at a special launch event tomorrow, March 9.
Discussing Cupertino’s debut wearable, Ive says he is more focused on making it the best he can rather than launching a smash-hit product.
“I’m much more concerned about how we can make them as good as possible than how many we’ll sell,” he stated. “We’re brutally self-critical and go through countless iterations of each product.”
However, reports suggest Apple may have held back on the substance once again. Last month we heard that the Apple Watch battery is underwhelming, reportedly lasting less than a day on a single charge.
